We Race Because…
But, when you participate and fundraise for the Race, we fight these statistics together. In 1980, the 5-year relative survival rate for women diagnosed with early stage breast cancer (cancer confined to the breast) was about 74 percent. Today, that number is 99 percent! Komen has played a critical role in every major advance in the fight against breast cancer - transforming how the world talks about and treats this disease and helping to turn millions of breast cancer patients into breast cancer survivors. This progress was made with your continued support and together we can reach our vision of a world without breast cancer.
Since 1995 Susan G. Komen of Northeastern New York has granted out over 3.2 Million dollars to local organizations who provide screening, treatment, education and support to women with breast cancer right here in our area. 25% of the money raised here funds groundbreaking research which is improving survival and discovering new treatment options for women with breast cancer but 75% of the funds raised here STAY HERE in the Capital District and North Country. Over the past 20 years tens of thousands of women have recieved mammograms, rides to screenings and oncology appointments, access to support services such as peer mentoring, breast health navigation, support groups, rehabilitative fitness classes, and retreats thanks to funding from Komen NENY. Hundreds of thousands have been educated about breast cancer and many of our programs have succeeded in reaching even the most isolated populations. Thanks to participants and donors like you, we can continue to support breast cancer survivors in our community, educate women about breast cancer, break down barriers to accessing screening servivces and ensure that women in our community have access to care if they are diagnosed with breast cancer.
